The racecourse is situated one mile west of Thurles town, five miles west of the main Cork-Dublin Road. Thurles is a right handed oval of 1 1/4 miles with run in of 1 1/4 furlongs and an uphill finish. Earliest records suggest that the first meeting a Thurles was in 1732.
Racing gets underway for the winter National Hunt season generally from late September to early April. The highlight of the season is the February meeting which is well regarded as an excellent trial for the forthcoming National Hunt Festival meetings at Cheltenham, Fairyhouse and Punchestown.
